Well it's been a bit quiet on this 'ere blog for a while but we are back to let you know that we are taking part in International Record Store Day for the second year running. Last year was a great success and lots of fun, this year looks to be the same. We'll be hosting DJ's instore and drinking some beer, we might even cook some chicken up for you again. Look out for further details closer to the time. For now all you need to know is that it takes place on Saturday 18th April.

We believe it is right to celebrate the role that record stores play in the cultural life of local communities, especially here in Bristol now that we have very few! Record shops are an international community and platform where music has an outlet and an opportunity to grow over the long term, in a way that sincerely connects with community and culture.

"these paintings are about love and desire they are about beauty and the beast inspired by chinoisery and also the work of Claude Monet. I see a similarity bnetween a stylish graffiti tag and the chinese brush works and watercolurs. My work hardly shows what many see as graffiti allthough i work in exactly the same way using a spraycan with speed and skill allthough here im trying to bottle a whirlwhind or box an explosion just like when we fall in love."

Skull Disco roadshow hits Brizzle town

Skull Disco's Shackleton will be hitting Bristol on 10th Feb for an instore performance at Rooted at approximately 6pm. For those that can't make the show, Highroad present an evening at Cosies Wine Bar featuring Shackleton, Rob Smith from Bristol legends Smith & Mighty (forebears to the Bristol dubstep and indeed jungle scenes) and this town's hardest working dubstep duo, Bubonic & Kymatik later that evening.

It's a big year ahead for Sam Shackleton and his partner in crime, Appleblim. Feverish anticipation is already building for the awesome Skull Disco # 6 12" and an remix of epic proportions of Shack's 'Blood on my Hands' by a certain Mr Villalobos. Come down and check out the exclusive dubplate selection. You are all in for a treat. Unmissable!

2006 is really hotting up now as a slew of quality releases begin to hit the streets.

The ridiculously exciting prospect of the return of the mighty Dump Valve imprint is upon us. After a long break, Geeneus’s legendary label is back with some mouth watering releases. First up is Wiley with his long awaited ‘Avenger’ rhythm, already a hit on the pirates with big support from The Plastician. To follow soon after is the Geeneus remix of Wonder’s ‘What’, another underground classic. I’ve got my fingers crossed that Wonder’s ‘Undertaker’ track may be in the pipeline for later in the year….

The third release in the Skull Disco series is now out and can’t be recommended highly enough. Shackleton’s ‘Blood on my Hand’ is immense. Other new releases more than worthy of note are Kode 9’s ‘9 Samurai’, Luke Envoy’s ‘Honour Kill’, Atki2’s ‘Guilty Pleasures’ EP featuring the Pinch remix of the title track and the timely repress of the immense Tempa Allstars Vol 2 from Tempa for those who didn’t grab it first time around.

2006 is living up to it’s high expections with some more massive releases soon to drop. Digital Mystikz ‘Ancient Memories’ on DMZ and the Mystikz double 12” release on Soul Jazz (oldies but goodies – ‘Conference’, ‘Misty Winter’, ‘Walk with Jah’ & ‘Earth Run A Red’, all bonafide DMZ classics in their own right.). The Burial album will be dropping on Hypadub in mid May, as will the Amit LP on Klute’s Commercial Suicide (the best d’n’b album to come out in years, trust me!) Blackdown's new EP on his own Keysound label featuring a remix from Burial and Bristol’s own Headhunter debuts on Ascension records with '7th Curse' too!

Also very imminent is the first part of the Tectonic label album. A 4 x 10” series of cutting edge dubstep from some of the scenes biggest names. Tectonic taking it to the next level!!! The first 10” due out in June features Skream’s ‘Bahl Fwd’ and Distance’s ‘Tempatation’, whilst part two will be DQ1’s ‘Wear the Crown’ and Mk1’s ‘Slang’. Two more 10”s will follow leading to a CD project. You heard it here first.

The city of Bristol has a long history of underground music, a cultural melting pot removed from the fast moving insular pressure trends of the London music scene.

Proud to be home to one of the largest dubstep scenes in the world outside London, these profiles exemplify of just some of the established and emerging talent to come out of the vibrant Bristol underground.

Forsaken

A lone gunman in the UK underground, Forsaken doesn’t run with a crew. Developing his cuts over the last few years, he has created an emotive & organic style rooted in the earthy UK traditions of breakbeat manipulation and raw drumfunk. Forsaken’s unique style encompasses elements of dubstep, breaks and griminess without conforming to any specific genre. His creative vision is unique and there’s no one quite like him.

Forsaken made his Dubloaded debut to a sell out crowd in February this year and immediately made his mark with a high energy set of quick mixes and rumbling bass pressure, blending grime anthems, dub step classics and his own dub plate selections. Regular appearances at Bristol’s Noir event attest to his djing prowess, always guaranteed to smash up a dance.

Wedge

Wedge has been making moves in the South West underground for a few years now, starting out co-promoting the ‘Underground’ event with Appleblim from Skull Disco.

Since then he has made Dj appearances at some of the leading nights in Bristol including Dubloaded, Drive By, and Dissident. Now a fully pledged member of the H.E.N.C.H crew, Wedge has the dubs for a guaranteed heavyweight selection each and every time.

Wedge has been honing his production skills, creating a soundscape of sinister atmospherics and punishing bass frequencies. Drawing on influences from a wide spectrum of producers, Wedge has attained a truly unique sound.

Dark FM is now the home to Wedge’s hugely successful weekly underground radio show, showcasing exclusive dubplate cuts from the top producers in the UK with the focus on pushing the Bristol and West country talents to the extreme. Tuesdays 10pm-12pm GMT.

Headhunter

One of the three founding members of Bristol’s H.E.N.C.H. crew, Headhunter is another exciting production talent to emerge from the Bristol underground. His sound of deep, dark minimal rolling synthetic atmospherics has been causing quite a stir in the Bristol scene.

Headhunter has been gradually building a local following through the weekly H.E.N.C.H radio show on Bristol pirate station BS1 radio hosted by MC Scorpio, featuring dubplate selections from himself and fellow H.E.N.C.H crew Whiteboi, J@kes and Wedge. The variety in sounds from the H.E.N.C.H crew’s plates makes from an exciting journey though bass pressure such is the variety and depth to their sonic pallete.

With the success of their Dubloaded debut in March (and a headlining slot secured for May) and also high profile support slots at some of the bigger underground music events in the South West of England, 2006 is proving a busy year already for Headhunter.

May sees the first release on Ascension Records run in association with their close friend and Bristolian D’n’B superstar Tech Itch which features Headhunters track ‘7^th Curse’. Expect more from H.E.N.C.H. on Ascension throughout 2006!

Newham General's first release on Dizzee Rascal's Dirtee Stank label is one of the picks of the bunch for me. Two big instrumentals from Footsie set bust speakers worldwide.

The release of Skreamism Vol 1 on Tempa has got to be a landmark release. After the watershed of Request Line, Tempa is finally getting noticed after years in the margins. Big.

Other newbies in stock are Kode 9's remix of 'All Think' on US label Voltage, the first in the Hot Flush remix series (Vex'd remix of Knowledge and Loefah's mix of Candyfloss), Mr Keys Vol 2 (Skream again), Darqwan vs Mark One on Storming, Slem Dem's 'Joyride' riddim, Big-E-D's Backlash EP on Frontline plus a few more. What a start to the year. For those that didn't make it, Saturday night saw a precedent being set. The gauntlet has been thrown down. 2006 is here, and the DMZ crew are leading the way.

3rd Base in Brixton was rammed by 11'o clock in time to hear Bristol's own dubplate don Pinch rolling out the heavyweight dubstep selection we have come to expect. Random Trio's 'Gutter', Distance’s ‘Temptation’ and Pinch’s own 'Qawwali' and 'Live with it' being personal highlights. Nuff respect!

Next up, Rinse FM’s inimitable DJ Chef accompanied by DMZ’s resident MC Sgt. Pokes, whose cries of ‘Chef! Peel it!’ (once Chef had whipped the crowd into a reload craving frenzy) always makes me chuckle. Those who caught Chef at Dubloaded at The Croft in Bristol know what the man is capable of, and believe me the dance floor was heaving.

By the time the DMZ crew stepped up to the decks, 3rd Base had reached unprecedented levels of anticipation. Even the intro tune had to be rewound! A two hour onslaught of bass pressure ensued. Tonight was their night, a set to remember. Pure vibes. Mala and Loefah have such an armoury of tunes that even so far unreleased tracks such as ‘Haunted’ and ‘Changes’ can surely be considered as bonafide DMZ classics. In fact the most memorable part of the evening was Mr Blackdown calmly striding the full length of the room to pull up ‘Antiwar Dub’.

Hatcha had the impossible task of following DMZ, but with help from Crazy D on the mic, he stepped up and represented to the fullest. The original dubstep DJ.

By the time Distance’s set began, the Guinness Exports had fully kicked in and I was resigned to a wall leaning position. Memories are hazy of this point in the evening, but I can remember enjoying hearing ‘Fallen’ with the sound turned up to 11, and Pinch demanding a reload of Distance’s mix of ‘Prayer’ by Random Trio. I’m gutted to admit I didn’t last for Kode 9’s Jungle set, but my dancing had been done. What a dance it was.
